Director of Nursing Perioperative Services

We are looking for a Perioperative Services Director to join our fun and fast paced surgery center team! We are an ophthalmology clinic and surgery center that focuses on vision correction and oculoplastic surgeries.

Job Summary:

Responsible for the daily activities of the Center related to all surgical services provided. Coordinates and oversees the daily operating room schedule and the patient/staff flow from intake through discharge. Responsible for the Nursing and Ancillary staff involved in the surgical services.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures all surgical procedures are performed within Center Policies and Procedures and Regulatory Guidelines.
  • Supervises the Intake, Operating, and Recovery Rooms and other Discharge Areas to ensure appropriate staff assignment and patient flow.
  • Works closely with the Administrator and the Medical Director to ensure that the Center functions in a coordinated, organized manner and consistently provides quality care and services.
  • Ensures the completion of the O.R. Logs and is aware of the numbers of cases scheduled, the numbers of cases performed and the numbers of cases not completed and the reasons not completed.
  • Ensures that the Medical Records are reviewed prior to a surgical procedure and prior to discharge to maintain complete and accurate documentation.
  • Provides health education to patients and their significant others.
  • Works with the Administrator to provide education to the staff; conducts staff meetings.
  • Ensures the daily checking of the crash carts and related supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures adequate staffing for all areas; recruits, hires and fires to maintain staffing levels.
  • Schedules staff and reviews time sheets for time and attendance for staff involved with the Surgical Services.
  • Assist the Administrator to assure the upkeep and maintenance of the surgical floor.
  • Assist the Administrator to assure the upkeep and maintenance of all medical equipment.
  • Ensures the daily testing of the autoclave prior to the start of surgical cases.
  • Shares on-call responsibilities as scheduled by the Administrator as indicated.
  • Serves as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee and is a participant in the Quality Improvement Program.
  • In the absence of the Administrator, assures that all reportable incidents are reported according to the time schedule noted in the Texas State Rules and Regulations.
  • Serves as a member of the Infection Control Committee and tracks patient and staff infections. Coordinates the flu vaccine program and the Hepatitis B program for staff.
  • Interfaces with all regulatory agencies. Keeps standards as required.
  • Interacts with the Pharmacist and Medical Records Consultants in assisting the Administrator to ensure appropriate follow-up to their recommendations.
  • Participates in the development, review, revision, implementation, interpretation, and monitoring of Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensures that strict adherence to Infection Control Policies are followed and monitors practice of Infection Control Protocol.
  • Responsible for performing nursing chart audits for Quality Assurance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Reports reportable Incidents to the Texas State Department of Health, adhering to Reporting Requirements; reports the same information internally to the Board of Directors and Quality Improvement Committee.
  •  If indicated, Ensures 24 Hour coverage for the Clinical Services; including scheduling of on-call coverage and follow up of on call taken via the on-call log and individual patient charts.
  • Conducts routine environmental rounds throughout the Center; addresses negative findings, as appropriate, and reports the findings and actions taken at the QI Committee meeting.
  • Interacts with Center Consultants (Pharmacy Consultant, QA and the Infection Control Consultant), regarding reports and recommendations.
  • As necessary, provides direct patient care in all areas.

Education and Experience:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Texas State.
  • Prior experience in peri-operative nursing required.
  • Perioperative Director Experience preferred and/or five or more years’ experience as a Supervisor or O.R. Manager.
  • Experience in regulatory oversight for perioperative services required.
  • BLS and ACLS certification.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  •  Ability to sit/stand for a considerable amount of time; ability to walk.
  • Visual and auditory acuity for frequent use of computer, telephone, and occasional use of other office equipment.
  •  Ability to perform occasional overhead and low reaching.
  • Physical strength required for equipment needs and patient-care activities.
  • Visual and auditory acuity for timely responsiveness and patient-care assessment activities.
  • Ability to move quickly in response to center needs.
  • Constant and frequent judgment and response.
  • Occasional judgment and response to disasters or emergencies, actual events, or drills.
