Job Description:

Job Description:

Assists optometrists and surgeons with diagnostic testing, preliminary screenings, procedures, and administrative tasks. Works with extreme attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectively.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday. 8 hours shift will be within the hours of 7:00am-6:00pm and may vary from week to week. Weekend Availability.

Job Description: (include but are not limited to):

· Building rapport with patients and documenting ocular and medical histories

· Performing various scans, imaging and tests using ophthalmic instruments that provide essential patient data: OCT, autorefractor, pentacam topography, optical biometry, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, extraocular movement/motility, visual fields, BAT test, A-Scan ultrasonography, and ultrasound biomicroscopy

· Administering physician-directed ocular medications and oral medication for testing, treatment, and procedures

· Inputting patients’ ocular and medical history, History of Present Illness and Chief Complaint into their Electronic Medical Record

· Intermittently assisting physicians during minor procedures, including instrumentation, preparations, and documentation

· Aiding in patient education pertaining to procedures offered, treatment available, and medications prescribed

· Upholding HIPAA requirements

· Maintaining professional appearance and conduct, a positive attitude, and self-motivation

· Maintaining efficiency and accuracy during high-volume clinic

· Cleaning and restocking exam rooms with medical supplies

  • Manage patients’ admission processes to preoperative department in ambulatory setting 
  • Assess the status of patients’ health in pre-op and ensure accuracy of identification wristband 
  • Ensure that operative and informed consents are in order 
  • Verify the surgeon and procedure being performed 
  • Take and record vital statistics of patients to ensure readiness for surgical procedure 
  • Initiate IVs and ensure that patients are informed about the procedure and attending medical staff 

POST-OPERATIVE DUTIES: 

  • Assess patients’ condition after surgery has been performed 
  • Ensure that all vitals are within normal range and documented in the patient’s record. 
  • Answer patients’ questions and ensure that they are kept comfortable 
  • Monitor patients for condition change and report any changes to the doctor or anesthesiologist 
  • Initiate patient education programs to ensure that both patients and families are educated on procedures and medications 
  • Perform intervention duties in cases of post-operative emergencies

  • Escorts the patients to and from the Pre-Op/PACU bays and assists the patient in preparation for the visit.

  • Collects and processes specimens, as directed by the Surgeon, Registered Nurse, or Anesthesiologist. 
  • Maintains the Pre-Op/PACU bays between patients. 
  • Maintains other areas of the center as directed. 
  • Assists, as requested, with the ordering process, restocking, and maintenance of supplies and equipment. 
  • Maintains refrigerator temperature, equipment, and maintenance logs. 
  • Performs tests as directed by the Surgeon, Registered Nurse or Anesthesiologist. 
  • Performs decontamination and sterilization of equipment 
  • Participates in quality assurance/risk management activities as requested by the Clinical Director or the Administrator. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Experience: 

  • Must have certification from a medical assistant program or military medical corpsman program. 
  • One to two years of experience in a medical setting. 
  • Have a high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent. 
  • A basic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, coding procedures, reference tools, and appropriate clinical pharmacology for medical assistant practice scope.
