Overcoming Over-40 Vision with the Corneal Inlay

This near vision loss actually has a scientific name, age-related presbyopia, but it is most commonly referred to as “over-40 vision” – a great descriptor for a not-so-great condition. Why does it happen? As you age, the lenses of your eyes and the muscles that control them begin to weaken. Thus, you lose the ability to focus on near objects. The Corneal Inlay, a breakthrough in vision correction technology, can now help patients who are over 40 read clearly again without the need for reading glasses.

The Inlay is inserted in the non-dominant eye, allowing the eyes to work together for clear vision up close and at a distance. The corneal inlay procedure takes only about 20 minutes, and Dr. Parkhurst performs it in our office. During the procedure, you will be awake and alert. Dr. Parkhurst will use numbing drops in the eye to be sure you are comfortable, and he will use a laser to create a small pocket or flap in the surface of the eye called the cornea. There may be slight pressure during this part of the procedure, but it only lasts a few seconds. The Inlay is then placed within this opening.
After the procedure, your eye may feel irritated or scratchy and may be sensitive to light or tear excessively but these symptoms will resolve. You will be given medications that will help with those symptoms. You will not be able to drive right after the procedure, so you will need to bring someone with you to drive you home.
What to Expect Immediately Following the Procedure
Most patients resume normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. A few precautions are necessary, however, to promote healing and to get optimal results from surgery. Avoid using reading glasses and keep all follow-up appointments with the doctor. Be sure to take all prescribed medications, including artificial tears, to avoid developing dry eye. The Corneal Inlay can be safely removed if necessary.
The Recovery
As with any surgical procedure, it is critical to follow your doctor’s instructions. Vision improvement and healing times are different for everyone. Some patients see improvement within a week, while others may take several months or more for vision to become clear. It is typical to see vision fluctuations for the first three to six months, as the brain adapts to vision correction. Dry eye is also a common issue after surgery. These symptoms should resolve in time as patients continue to follow the doctor’s instructions. It is important to remember that reading glasses may still be needed for some things such as tiny print or reading in dim light.
